Here's the uncomfortable truth: AI systems can cause real harm. They can perpetuate biases, invade privacy, displace workers, and concentrate power. Ethics is about proactively addressing these concerns.
AI systems learn from data, and data often reflects historical biases. If you train a hiring model on past hiring decisions, it might learn to favor candidates who look like successful past hires—which often means perpetuating existing inequalities.
I've seen this firsthand. A resume screening system that seemed objectively good was accidentally downgrading graduates from women's colleges. The model had learned that certain schools correlated with hiring success, and those schools had historically been male-dominated.
This isn't malicious—it's a consequence of optimizing for historical data without considering fairness.
AI systems often require massive amounts of data. This raises questions about what data is collected, how it's used, and whether individuals can control their information.

Regularly audit AI systems for bias, performance, and compliance. Establish clear accountability structures.
Here's a genuinely hard question: whose ethics should guide AI development?
Different cultures and societies have different values. What one group considers acceptable, another might find concerning. Global technology requires navigating these differences.
Additionally, the people building AI systems are often not the same as those affected by them. Tech workers are predominantly male, young, and from specific countries. The communities most impacted by AI—often marginalized groups—are frequently absent from the development process.
Meaningful inclusion matters. Ethical AI requires diverse perspectives at the table.
There's often a perceived tension between ethics and progress. "Do we want to slow down AI development?" is a common concern.
I don't think this framing is helpful. Ethical AI isn't about slowing down—it's about building AI that actually works for everyone. Biased AI doesn't work well. AI that loses public trust can't succeed. AI that causes harm invites regulation.
Ethics and capability aren't at odds—they're complementary. The best AI systems are both powerful and responsible.

The technology itself is neither good nor evil—it's a tool. But tools reflect the intentions and values of those who build them. We have a responsibility to build AI that works for everyone, not just some.
The questions are hard. The answers aren't clear. But avoiding the questions isn't an option. The future of AI depends on getting this right.
